The Sustainable Campus Ceremony 2017

Under the patronage of the Ministry of Education-Higher Affairs

EAD and Borouge honour university and college students for their contribution to the Sustainable Campus Initiative

Abu Dhabi, 1st November, 2017 – Celebrating the success of the fourth year of the Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI), the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) in partnership with Borouge hosted a ceremony to reward the exemplary audits and sustainable action projects of participating colleges.

The event started with the inauguration an exhibition held alongside the ceremony also under the theme of “Sustainability in our Communities” where universities and colleges presented their sustainable projects. Exhibitors from eight colleges and universities including the UAE University, Abu Dhabi University, Zayed University, American University of Sharjah, American University of Ras Al Khaimah, New York University Abu Dhabi, Petroleum Institute Abu Dhabi and Manipal University of Dubai participated at the exhibition. In addition to a stand from the Green Youth Majlis.

The ceremony was attended by H.E. Dr. Hassan Obaid Almheiri – Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Accreditation & Educational Services, Ministry of Education -Higher Affairs, Ahmed Omar Abdulla, CEO of Borouge, Abdulrahman Essa Al Ateek, Acting Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Borouge. In addition, Dr. Abdullah Zamzam, EAD’s Assistant Secretary General of Operations, Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director of the Environmental Science, Information and Outreach Sector at EAD, and a group of ADNOC OPCOs CEOs as well as directors, deans, coordinators and students.

Awards were given in two categories for the Green Campus Audit 2017 to the American University of Sharjah and Manipal University of Dubai and the Sustainable Action Project was awarded to the American University of Sharjah and Manipal University of Dubai. Participation Certificates were also given to all SCI colleges and universities in recognition of their commitment to our vision of a ‘sustainable environment for a sustainable future.

H.E. Dr. Hassan Obaid Al-Mheiri, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Accreditation & Educational Services, Ministry of Education -Higher Affairs said, “The focus of environmental sustainability has received great attention from our wise leadership, which has a great impact on preserving our environment in a sustainable manner. This will only be achieved through concerted efforts in all sectors and fields in order to create environmental awareness among all members of society. “The environment is a shared community responsibility that needs the attention of all to preserve it and devise promising solutions to address environmental issues ", he added

HE Dr. Al Mheiri expressed his hope that the Ministry of Education, through its partnership with environmental authorities, has sought to involve local universities in the SCI as we believe in the importance of young people in developing innovative environmental solutions aimed at improving the environment”.

Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director of the Environmental Science, Information and Outreach Sector at EAD said: “We believe that universities have an important role to play in addressing environmental challenges and sustainability. We look forward to their role in driving innovation through research, studies and pilot initiatives. SCI is designed with its activities to realise our vision of empowering, motivating young people to provide environmental ideas and proposals that will transform our society onto a more sustainable path”.

Abdulrahman Essa Al Ateek, Acting Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs at Borouge said: “We are pleased to honour our university students – Leaders of the Future – who effectively contribute to the success of the Sustainable Campus Initiative by enhancing the sustainable development of their campuses. At Borouge, we focus on engaging all members of the community, mainly youth, in adopting best practices in environmental stewardship and social responsibility”.

“Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the way we manage our operations and the innovative plastics solutions we manufacture, and we are proud to impart our vision and commitment to sustainability to the next generation so that they will be better contributors to our national economy”, Al Ateek added.

The Sustainable Campus Initiative (SCI) has been working hard to empower the youth since 2014 and continues to strive to engage youth and involve them in promoting environment sustainability within their own campus and their community.

SCI provides the platform to enable networking amongst youth, challenge them to acknowledge their own contribution to environmental impact and engage them in working constructively towards sustainable solutions for now and long-term.

In the past academic year 2016-2017 SCI achievements and progress include:

  1. 14 Colleges/Universities from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah participating in the initiative.
  2. 4 Green Youth Majlis held.
  3. 9 March 2017, SCI Annual Conference “Mainstreaming SDG’s & Paris Treaty Concerns in University of UAE”.
  4. 1 project for the Year of Giving, with their second Ramadan Campaign promoting ‘A Caring Hand’.
  5. 2 workshops were held as part of ADMAF for children to understand ecosystems.
  6. 2 March 2017, Ministry of Education circulated the Sustainability Framework for Universities in the UAE to all Higher Education Institutions.



The Sustainable Campus Initiative, along with a range of other programmes implemented by EAD, is supported by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC), Al Ain Distribution Company (AADC(, Tadweer (The Centre for Waste Management - Abu Dhabi) and Department of Transport (DOT).
